Pro and your key
The download is the personal edition. A Pro key, pasted into it, makes the same app Pro. Nothing to reinstall.
What a key opens
- Work. Use at your job, for a company, for clients or for pay. A key is for one person, on one Mac; a team that shares an installation needs the commercial edition. The terms say it in full.
- Shaping the members. Edit a shipped member's voice, or add a member of your own, on the Personas page. Without a key those pages are read-only.
- The phone app, paired to your Mac from anywhere.
Getting one
Keys are free while Pro is in beta. Write to us from the email address the key is for, and we reply with it. One email address gets one key. A key is one line of text beginning VH1. Keep the email: it is your copy.
Pasting it
- Open Settings › About.
- Under Have a Pro key? Paste it here., paste the whole key and confirm.
- The window says Valhalla Pro, licensed to your name, and About now shows the Pro edition and whose key it is.
The key is checked on your Mac, so the first paste is the only time it needs the internet, and even that is not required: see the next section. If this Mac has accounts, only the owner can paste or remove the key.
One key, one Mac
One key is one seat, for one Mac, and belongs to one email address. Pasting it claims the seat for this Mac, by sending our licence database the key's serial and a one-way fingerprint of the Mac (the privacy page has exactly what). If the database cannot be reached, the key works at once and the claim is tried again the next day. Only a no from the database stops a key.
Moving to a new Mac. The key lives in ~/.valhalla/licence.key and moves with that folder, but the seat belongs to the old Mac. Write to us to release it, then paste the key again on the new Mac.
Removing it. Settings › About › Remove the key returns the app to the personal edition. Your conversations, knowledge and skills are untouched. It does not free the seat; write to us for that.
When a key is refused
| The app says | What it means |
|---|---|
| That is not a Valhalla key. | Part of it is missing. Paste the whole line, from VH1 to the end, with nothing around it. |
| That key was not issued for Valhalla. | A character changed on the way. Copy it again from the email. |
| This key is already in use on another Mac. | The key's one seat is taken by another Mac. Ask for it to be released, then paste it here again. |
| That key has expired. | Keys do not expire unless they say so; this one did. Write to us. |
| That key was revoked. | We withdrew it, usually because it was shared or published. The app checks for that once a day, alongside the update check. |
